LIVING ENVIRONMENT COURSE OVERVIEW
Living Environment is designed as a one-year course. The nine units are tied together through a set of enduring topics* that spiral in the course. The sequence of units below is designed to introduce the new three-dimensional learning standards, while still preparing students for the LE Regents Exam.

STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION:

How do the structures of organisms enable life’s functions?

MATTER AND ENERGY IN ORGANISMS AND ECOSYSTEMS:

How do organisms obtain and use energy

they need to live and grow? How do matter and energy move through ecosystems?

INTERDEPENDENT RELATIONSHIPS IN ECOSYSTEMS:

How do organisms interact with the living and non-living environment to obtain matter and energy?

INHERITANCE AND VARIATION OF TRAITS:

How are the characteristics from one

generation related to the previous generation?

NATURAL SELECTION AND EVOLUTION:

How can there be so many similarities among organisms yet so many different plants, animals, and microorganisms? How does biodiversity affect humans?
