About Me!
Hello!
My name is Mrs. Elizabeth Cascio and I have been an ELA Teacher at JHS 194 for over 10 years. I always strive to provide as much of a nurturing, welcoming, and safe environment for my students above all academics, and genuinely yearn to establish connections that will lead to growth, improvement, and mastery.
Educational Background:
I was born and raised in Flushing, Queens and attended St. Francis Prep for High School. I then graduated from New York University (NYU) with a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications and went on to work for magazines such as Reader’s Digest, Selecciones, and Prevention Magazine. I did a ton of work in Marketing, Public Relations, and Advertising so I know a thing or two about that field. I then wanted to shift gears and pursued a Masters of Education in Adolescent Education from St. John’s University and after working in Brooklyn for a bit teaching High School and a brief stint at St. Francis Prep, I then joined the JHS 194 family. I am pleased to now let you know that I am currently in the midst of completing my PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at SJU so in a few short years, I’ll go from Mrs. Cascio to Dr. Cascio.
Home Life:
I am a mom of 3! I have a 7 year old girl and 2 boys, ages 5 and 3. They know how to keep me busy =) We also have 2 fish and a dog named Rusty. He is a rescue pup and he is part Cattle dog and part Rat Terrier. I’m sure you’ll get to hear about all these kiddos and the pup throughout the year. My husband’s family owns a small business, we live on Long Island, and I love binging on Netflix shows (if I ever have the time).
Additional Information:
I love reading books when I can, especially thrillers. My favorite books are Pride & Prejudice, Gone Girl, The Bell Jar, and Catcher in the Rye. My favorite movies are Pride & Prejudice, Airforce One, Miracle, and Forrest Gump. As for music, I love alternative and classic rock. As for food, I eat just about anything. My parents are Chilean, thus making me fluent in Spanish. I also know a little bit of French (worked for Air France for a few years in my early college life). I love to travel and have been to Spain, France, tons of Islands in the Caribbean, Chile, and domestically, I love traveling to Vermont (especially during Ski season!).
Goals:
Aside from hoping I never fail my family (and students), I’d love to one day just teach teachers how to teach to keep the cycle of good teaching going. As for this school year, I aspire to get students to love reading, no matter what it is, and learning just about anything. The added plus would be to raise your reading levels and get some excellent conversation and debate in (that’s where we become better / informed people!).
Hoping for a great year!
Mrs. Cascio
